National Symbols


The Flag

The national flag of the Republic of Angola was adopted in 1975, at the time of the proclamation of Independence.

The national flag has two colors in horizontal bands. The upper band is red-red and the lower one black and represent:

a) Red-red - blood shed by Angolans during colonial oppression, the struggle for national liberation and defense of the homeland;

b) Black - the African Continent

In the center, a composite figure made up of a section of a toothed wheel, symbol of international solidarity and progress.

The toothed wheel, the machete and the star are yellow which represents the wealth of the country.



The Insignia of the Republic

The Insingnia the Republic of Angola is formed by a section of a toothed wheel and a foliage of corn, coffee and cotton, representing respectively the workers and industrial production, farmers and agriculture production. In basis of design, an open book symbol of education, culture and the rising sun signifying the New Country.

The center is placed a machete and a hoe symbolizing the work and the beginning of armed struggle. At the top appears the star, symbol of international solidarity and progress.

At the bottom of the emblem is placed a golden band with the inscription 'Republic of Angola".



The National Anthem

The national anthem was adapted in 1975 after the country have become free from Portuguese colonial rule.

O Fatherland, never forget
The heroes of February 4.
O Fatherland, we salute your sons
Who died for our Independence.

We honor the past and our history,
Building the New Man at Work,
(repeated the last two verses)
